Megan Dutton

Special interest in biomechanics, sport injuries and shoulder pain

Megan completed her B.PhysT (with distinction) at the University of Pretoria in 2004. Her career as a physiotherapist started at the High Performance Centre, Pretoria where she had the privilege of working with numerous elite athletes and national teams (amongst others: SA Netball, SA Rowing, SA Men’s and Women’s Hockey). During her tenure as at the HPC she formed part of the medical team used by Cricket South Africa for their annual National Academy. This later manifested in her appointment as the team physiotherapist for the CSA Women’s (2008-2012) and U19 Men’s (2010-2014) Cricket Teams, respectively; culminating in her attendance at four ODI World Cups (2014: Winners), two T20 World Cups and numerous local and international series’.  In addition, Megan was also selected as part of the medical team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in Dehli, India.

Following her relocation to Cape Town in 2009, Megan embarked on an MSc Physiotherapy degree at UCT (2010-2012), titled: “The Effect of Scapulothoracic Rehabilitation on Chronic Shoulder Pain in Competitive Swimmers”. In addition, she started her own physiotherapy practice (Megan Dutton Physiotherapists: 2010-2020), which has recently been renamed as Optimal Physio: Megan Dutton Physiotherapists Inc. Along with her passion as a clinician, Megan also strives to “pay it forward” within her profession, by lecturing under- and post-graduate physiotherapy students at UCT (since 2011). Finally, Megan completed her Phd (Exercise Science) at UCT in 2019, titled: “The cricketers shoulder: Biomechanics and analysis of potential injury risk factors to the shoulder in elite cricketers.” This accolade has allowed her to present several scientific papers at various local and international conferences.

In closing, it is Megan’s hope to become one of the leading shoulder experts in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in years to come.
